The City of Oulu’s long-term goal is to increase the vitality, attraction and enjoyment of the city centre. Valkea Shopping Centre, which will be completed in the centre of Oulu in 2016, will become the number one retail site for the Oulu region, and will also include residential apartments. The construction of Valkea Shopping Centre is ongoing and the new facility will open its doors in spring 2016, with the apartments being ready in June of the same year.
In central district of the city, Valkea Shopping Centre will form a diverse city centre venue for fashion and services, including a Sokos department store, plenty of branded shops, restaurants and cafés as well as a Sokos Herkku grocery store. In total, it represents investments of more than €100 million in the heart of Oulu.
The total value of Skanska’s contracts in the project is approximately €42 million. Skanska’s and Arina’s contracts include the construction of the new shopping centre, the renovation of the facilities in the shopping centre and the creation of a section of pedestrian street connecting the two parts. The pedestrian street has been designed as a covered public space that is warm all year round, which is unique in Nordic conditions. Skanska is also building 66 high-quality apartments in a seven-storey building to be constructed on top of the shopping centre.
The residential building to be built above Valkea will be called Pajarinkulma. Pajarinkulma will be the tallest residential building in the centre of Oulu, offering wonderful views over the city. Calculated from ground level, the highest apartments will be on the 12th floor. The choice of apartments will be diverse and will include new homes from compact bedsits to grand dwellings covering 137.5 m², which will also include a large glazed balcony of 47.5 m².
The apartments will be situated between the 6th and 12th floors and all will have views over the whole city. On the roof of the fifth floor, there will be a garden with a putting green, a pétanque court and a barbecue shelter, among other things. Parking will be in the shopping centre parking hall, which will have a lift connection to the residential floors.
