Härmälänranta residential area, Tampere
Skanska is developing Härmälänranta in Tampere into a new, comfortable, and original district. The connecting thought is a city of uniform presence, where the home, possibilities of free time, and services come together. The area is designed and constructed in an environmentally responsible way. Härmälänranta represents urban living, in which good transport connections and the proximity of services make daily life easier and are, at the same time, a choice on behalf of more ecological living.
Good location makes for a smaller carbon footprint
Good location makes for a smaller carbon footprint. Well-located services and good possibilities to use public transport decrease the need to move around and increase ecological efficiency. Härmälänranta is located on the southern shore of Lake Pyhäjärvi, 5 kilometers from downtown Tampere. A small part of the district belongs to the municipality of Pirkkala. Construction began in 2007, and so far, 500 new homes have been completed. The entire area is estimated to be completed by 2024.
The general plan for Härmälänranta has been drawn up by the Swedish Tengbom Arkitekter, whose designs have been the basis for further block and apartment planning by BST-arkkitehdit Oy from Tampere. Planning has progressed in close cooperation with the City of Tampere and the Pirkkala municipality. Ideas for developing the area have been received from several directions and, among other things, workshops have been arranged with the residents in the area.
New ecologically efficient town planning
The ecological efficiency of the town structure means curbing the environmental effects of construction, living, and traffic. Results of VTT's EcoDrive project, among others, have served as the basis for Härmälänranta's design and solutions for issues relating to the energy efficiency of living. Härmälänranta is a target of research in different projects on environmental responsibility. These projects study energy efficiency, user friendliness, and new forms of living.
Ecological efficiency and the preconditions for good living have been taken into account from the earliest stages of town and land use planning. Energy solutions, arrangements for moving around, and utilization of the municipal engineering network have been carefully considered. As the existing industrial area is taken into residential use, the need for building a new network decreases. For example, the energy and traffic networks already exist in Härmälänranta.
Ecological efficiency of living in everyday choices
The buildings at Härmälänranta are low-energy consumption buildings. The modeling and orientation of the buildings and building technology solutions promote low energy consumption. The good waste sorting facilities of the buildings and housing associations enable environmentally friendly actions every day. Functioning traffic connections, both for public transport and by bicycle, reduce residents' carbon footprint.
Preconditions for a model area for sustainable living
Härmälänranta has good preconditions to become a model area for sustainable living. Input from municipalities is especially seen in traffic arrangements. At this early stage, the area already has good bicycle and pedestrian paths as well as bus connections to the city center. Plans for Härmälänranta have taken into account the possible arrival of a tram. The aim is to create an extensive local service network with daycare centers, shops, and restaurants. Cars are not needed for all everyday engagements.
